Egg Donation FAQs

Last Updated: June 15, 2026

Let’s take a trip down memory lane:

Think of your local swimming pool. The place where you would go on hot summer days to cool off. The sounds, the smells, and maybe even a Wendy Peffercorn-esque lifeguard. Now, remember the fear that came from looking down at the water from the high dive.

Attempting to dive into the world of egg donation can feel like jumping off the high dive. But don’t worry, we’ll throw you a safety ring whenever you need one. We know you’ve got questions, but as we’ve already been through the process ourselves, we’re here to give you all the answers.

So read on to find the answers to the most common egg donation FAQs.

Who Can Benefit From Egg Donation?

We believe that the right to have children should be available to anyone, regardless of age, sex, religion, marital status, ethnicity, nationality, or sexual orientation.

Period.

If you need assistance in starting your family, we want to talk to you. There are several reasons why you may need donor eggs. No matter the reason, we’re glad you found us.

Who are the Egg Donors?

Egg donors are incredibly selfless women. They want to help couples start their own families. They are willing to give their eggs to do so.

A few requirements we have for egg donors include:

  • Between the ages of 20-31
  • Be able to pass a psychological evaluation
  • Be drug-free
  • Live a healthy lifestyle

Our egg donors come from many diverse backgrounds. We have donors that are highly educated, some that are career-driven, and some who are athletes. They all have their own individual habits and interests. We are also proud of the different ethnicities we represent.

At Elevate Baby, we offer only the best of the best among our egg donors.

Will We Need to Make Legal Arrangements?

Yes. As soon as a match is made between the intended parents and an egg donor, legal arrangements will need to be made. These contracts are to protect the rights of everyone involved.

We refer our clients to the best egg donor lawyers in the industry. They will carefully review the contract to ensure you understand it. The contracts we work with are clear and concise, leaving nothing to question.

If you have a preference regarding whether there will be a relationship between the donor and the intended parents, this is where it will be spelled out for all parties involved.

How Affordable is Egg Donation?

We understand the financial burden placed on intended parents as they go through the egg donation process. That’s why we strive to offer the absolute best service for the most affordable price possible. While every case is different, we estimate that the entire process will cost between $35,000 and $55,000.

This amount covers:

  • Agency fees
  • Donor Compensation
  • Legal fees
  • Medical/insurance costs
  • Travel arrangements

Also, keep in mind that some donors can charge higher rates based on ethnicity, experience, and achievements.

Why Should You Choose Elevate Baby?

Elevate Baby is unique in that it was founded by a gay couple who had been through the egg donation process themselves. They decided to streamline the process and create an agency that actually works.

Because of their experience and expertise, you can expect the best donors, service, and care in the industry.

Where is Your Office Located?

We started our agency in New York but moved to Los Angeles to be closer to the best fertility doctors and clinics

Although we are based in Southern California, we offer our services to anyone, regardless of their location. We proudly represent clients from all over the world.

How Do I Get Started?

If you’re ready to begin your egg donation journey, we recommend starting here. We look forward to meeting you soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is egg donation and how does it work?

Egg donation is a form of assisted reproduction in which a donor takes hormone medications to mature multiple eggs, which are retrieved through a brief outpatient procedure and fertilized in a lab. The resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus of an intended parent or gestational carrier. The donor has no genetic or legal connection to any child born as a result of the process.

How long does the egg donation process take?

For intended parents, the process typically takes 3 to 6 months from beginning the donor search to embryo transfer. The timeline depends on how quickly a match is made, how smoothly legal and medical screening proceed, and the IVF clinic’s schedule. The egg retrieval procedure itself takes less than 30 minutes.

What are the medical requirements to become an egg donor?

Most egg donation programs, including Elevate, accept donors between ages 20 and 31 who are in good physical and mental health, have a healthy BMI, are non-smokers, and can pass a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation. Donors must have no significant personal or family history of hereditary conditions. A full eligibility review occurs during the application process.

Are egg donors anonymous?

Egg donations can be anonymous, known, or semi-known depending on the preferences of both the donor and the intended parents. Both parties document their communication preferences during the matching process, and those preferences are formalized in the legal contract. At Elevate, matching takes both parties’ relationship expectations into account from the start.

What are the risks and side effects of donating eggs?

The most common side effects are temporary and related to the hormone medications used for ovarian stimulation: bloating, mood changes, and injection site discomfort. A small percentage of donors experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a more significant response to the medications. Serious complications are rare. Donors are monitored closely by their medical team throughout the stimulation cycle.

What happens to unused embryos after egg donation?

Unused embryos are typically frozen and stored by the intended parents’ IVF clinic for potential future use, including subsequent transfers or sibling journeys. Intended parents may also choose to donate unused embryos to other families, donate them to research, or have them discarded. These decisions are made by the intended parents and documented in the legal agreement.

How much does egg donation cost for intended parents?

The total cost of egg donation for intended parents typically ranges from $35,000 to $55,000 per cycle. This includes IVF clinic fees, donor compensation, agency fees, legal representation, donor medications and screening, and any required travel. Costs vary based on the donor’s profile, clinic location, and whether additional cycles are needed.

Can single parents and same-sex couples use egg donation?

Yes. Egg donation is available to all intended parents regardless of relationship status, sexual orientation, or gender. Same-sex male couples typically use egg donation in combination with a gestational carrier. Single women may use donor eggs with their own uterus, while single men and male couples work with both an egg donor and a gestational surrogate.
