Yes. As soon as a match is made between the intended parents and an egg donor, legal arrangements will need to be made. These contracts are to protect the rights of everyone involved.

Egg donation is a form of assisted reproduction in which a donor takes hormone medications to mature multiple eggs, which are retrieved through a brief outpatient procedure and fertilized in a lab. The resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus of an intended parent or gestational carrier. The donor has no genetic or legal connection to any child born as a result of the process.
For intended parents, the process typically takes 3 to 6 months from beginning the donor search to embryo transfer. The timeline depends on how quickly a match is made, how smoothly legal and medical screening proceed, and the IVF clinic’s schedule. The egg retrieval procedure itself takes less than 30 minutes.
Most egg donation programs, including Elevate, accept donors between ages 20 and 31 who are in good physical and mental health, have a healthy BMI, are non-smokers, and can pass a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation. Donors must have no significant personal or family history of hereditary conditions. A full eligibility review occurs during the application process.
Egg donations can be anonymous, known, or semi-known depending on the preferences of both the donor and the intended parents. Both parties document their communication preferences during the matching process, and those preferences are formalized in the legal contract. At Elevate, matching takes both parties’ relationship expectations into account from the start.
The most common side effects are temporary and related to the hormone medications used for ovarian stimulation: bloating, mood changes, and injection site discomfort. A small percentage of donors experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a more significant response to the medications. Serious complications are rare. Donors are monitored closely by their medical team throughout the stimulation cycle.
Unused embryos are typically frozen and stored by the intended parents’ IVF clinic for potential future use, including subsequent transfers or sibling journeys. Intended parents may also choose to donate unused embryos to other families, donate them to research, or have them discarded. These decisions are made by the intended parents and documented in the legal agreement.
The total cost of egg donation for intended parents typically ranges from $35,000 to $55,000 per cycle. This includes IVF clinic fees, donor compensation, agency fees, legal representation, donor medications and screening, and any required travel. Costs vary based on the donor’s profile, clinic location, and whether additional cycles are needed.
