Which Is Better: Traditional or Gestational Surrogacy?

Although they are often confused or mistakenly grouped together, traditional and gestational surrogacy are two very different options that carry with them their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Understanding the key differences between the two can help you make the best choice for your family.

Breaking Down the Differences Between Traditional and Gestational Surrogacy

Here we’ll discuss the three largest factors to consider when deciding between traditional and gestational surrogacy.

Relationship

The biggest distinction between traditional and gestational surrogacy is the biological relationship that the surrogate will have with your child.

In gestational surrogacy, parents utilize their own eggs or those of an egg donor to create embryos. Their gestational surrogate then goes through the IVF and embryo transfer process to achieve a pregnancy.

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is utilizing her own eggs meaning that she and the child will share a biological link. Depending on your personal comfort level, this could be considered a large potential drawback. For many surrogates, this is also a drawback to traditional surrogacy as it can be found more difficult to hand back a baby genetically tied to them.

Budget

Because traditional surrogates use their own egg to help you conceive your child, the process to creating an embryo is typically both expedited and less expensive on intended parents than gestational surrogacy.

Traditional carriers are usually able to achieve pregnancy through IUI, intrauterine insemination, which is both less complicated and less expensive than IVF. In either type of surrogacy, you will still need to hire a specialized attorney to help you draft and complete a mutually beneficial contract.

Legality

Unfortunately, the drawbacks and potential complications of traditional surrogacy have led to it being illegal in several states. It can also be difficult to find a surrogate who is willing to pursue traditional surrogacy due to the emotional and biological connection. Nevertheless, traditional surrogacy remains a valid option to many intended parents.
